I will now take you
on a walk up the old abandoned railroad grade, just over a mile from
the 1864 Arch Bridge. Starting at a point on the grade that can be
reached from a dirt road that turns off Big Shanty Road from the
direction of Lewis Run, PA, approximately 200 yards before Lineman
Road and the bottom of Big Shanty Hill.
Starting Point off of Big Shanty Road
As you find a
place to park, not blocking the roadway, note the sign that
says "No Motor Vehicles Beyond This Point." The old railroad grade
runs parallel with Big Shanty Road. Before you start the trek to
the right, it looks like a well-maintained dirt road. Notice an old
metal yellow gate near the sign. Just right of the gate is the
location of the Erie Railroad-built Big Shanty Railroad depot.
Alongside the depot was the water tower, which I am sure was fed by
Bear Run Creek.
